JULY 2003 NEWSLETTER
BUSINESS CARD EXCHANGE
The Chamber held a Business Card Exchange at Susquehanna Bank on June 9th, hosted by branch manager Mike Himmel and his staff. The
evening was a great success and we had many inquiries about the Chamber and how
people could join.
The Country Kettle, owned by Jim and Amy Crooks, did a wonderful job
catering and everyone enjoyed the food - especially the pasta salad.
Winner of the door prize, a desk set given by Stapf Crafters Woodworking was Ellie Bonde, co-owner of Blossom & Basket Boutique and (hopefully!) a
potential new member.
Thanks are given again to Mike Himmel and the staff of Susquehanna Bank for a wonderful evening.

JULY 3rd MEETING
Our July meeting will be held on Thursday July 3rd at 8am
at the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire House at Watersville Road and Main Street. Please
enter the building by the back door.
We plan on discussing several things for the coming months as we likely will not
have a Chamber meeting in August. Items of interest: Chamber events including a
Summer Picnic; a September Business Card Exchange; the new Chamber brochure;
articles for the newspapers; changes to Associate membership; and other items.
JUNE MEETING DECISIONS
We created two new committees: Government Relations – co-chaired by
Jim Gill of JMG Enterprises & Marketing Group and Keith Mull of AIG/American
General Insurance; and Business Seminar/Fair – chaired by Carol Cahall of The Main Event.
We discussed the scholarships, and because of poor applications, we are not
giving any scholarships to the high school students this year.
We are deciding how we can use this money. Suggestions: possibly the Junior
Colleges, Frederick and/or Carroll and MAYAA. If you have any ideas, call Debbie
Harker of Barger-Harker Insurance at 301-831-0223 or email her at harkerd@nationwide.com.
We had a very good June meeting, with a good attendance, and we got a lot of
work done.
MARKETING AND AMBASSADORS
The Marketing and Ambassadors Committees continue to pound the phones
and sidewalks to tell businesses of the benefits of belonging to the Chamber.
We were happy to see new faces of businesses that had recently joined at our
recent Business Card Exchange, and we were able to introduce them to many of our
members.
We are working hard to keep members informed of upcoming events, while
continuing to do all we can to attract new businesses.
NEW BUSINESS ADVICE
At our June meeting we were pleased to welcome Mr. Mike Fish,
Business Counselor for Carroll County Small Business Corporation, and hear the
information he had for us.
You can get more information on the SBC from their website at mdsbdc.umd.edu.
PINS/PLAQUES AVAILABLE
You have probably seen the new Chamber pins several of our members
are wearing and the new table plaques at different events.
Name pins are available to all members for $9. Plaques with "Member of the
Chamber of Commerce" on them are available for $11.
Ordering details can be found on the website under "Member Resources", or call
Debbie Harker of Barger-Harker Insurance at 301-831-0223.
